Biotin vs Rice Hair Mask: Which One Does Your Hair Need? (2026)

Short answer: a biotin hair mask and a rice hair mask do two different jobs. A biotin hair mask is a strengthening treatment. It is for hair fall you see on the comb, and for hair that snaps easily and feels thin and weak. A rice hair mask is a deep conditioning treatment. It is for hair that feels dry, rough, frizzy or dull, or that has been coloured, rebonded or heat styled. So the right question is not which one is better. It is which problem your hair has. Many people have both, and the two masks can be used together in the same week. For hair fall and breakage in Pakistan, we recommend our Biotin Hair Mask. For dry, frizzy hair, we recommend our Rice Hair Mask.

This guide helps you work out which one you need, explains what each can really do, and shows how to use the COVERAGE Biotin Hair Mask and the COVERAGE Rice Hair Mask. Last updated: October 2026.

What is a hair mask, and how is it different from a conditioner?

A hair mask is a rich rinse-off conditioner that you leave on for 5 to 10 minutes after shampoo. A regular conditioner is lighter and is rinsed out sooner. On the days you use a mask, it replaces your conditioner.

A biotin hair mask is a strengthening mask made with biotin, usually paired with keratin. A rice hair mask is a deep conditioning mask made with rice extract, usually paired with oils and butters.

First, work out what your hair problem really is

Most people say hair fall for three different things: hair that sheds from the root, hair that breaks along its length, and hair that is simply dry and rough. Each one needs a different answer, so this step matters more than any product.

Shedding: hair that falls from the root

Shedding is a normal part of the hair cycle. The American Academy of Dermatology says it is normal to shed between 50 and 100 hairs a day. Shedding can rise a few months after an illness, childbirth, major weight loss or a period of stress. It usually settles on its own, and the Academy says hair tends to regain its normal fullness within six to nine months.

Breakage: hair that snaps along its length

Breakage happens when the hair fibre is weak and gives way under combing, tying, heat or chemical treatment. The hairs are shorter than your full length, and you see them on your clothes, your pillow and the comb. A lot of what people in Pakistan call baal girna is really breakage.

Dryness and frizz: hair that has lost its smooth surface

Dry, rough, frizzy hair has a raised outer layer. It tangles, looks dull and swells in humidity. It may not be falling at all. It just looks and feels unhealthy.

The 30-second hair check

Collect a few of the hairs that came out on your comb and look at them closely.

  • A full-length hair with a tiny pale bulb at one end is a shed hair. It came out from the root.
  • A shorter hair with no bulb, often with a rough or split end, is a broken hair.
  • Hair that is still on your head but feels like straw, tangles and frizzes is dry hair.
What you see What it is What helps
Short hairs, no bulb Breakage A strengthening routine: Biotin Shampoo and Biotin Hair Mask
Thin, limp hair that snaps Weak hair fibre A strengthening routine: Biotin Shampoo and Biotin Hair Mask
Rough, frizzy, dull hair Dryness and a raised outer layer A conditioning routine: Rice Silk Shampoo and Rice Hair Mask
Coloured, rebonded or heat styled hair Chemical and heat damage Rice Hair Mask, with the Biotin Hair Mask if it also breaks
Full-length hairs with a bulb, more than usual Shedding Gentle care while it settles. See a doctor if it is sudden, heavy or lasts.

What a biotin hair mask does

A biotin hair mask is built to make weak, fragile hair stronger, so that less of it breaks. The COVERAGE Biotin Hair Mask does that with four ingredients, each with its own job.

  • Biotin. Supports the keratin structure your hair is built from.
  • Hydrolyzed Keratin. Keratin broken down small enough to get inside damaged strands and reinforce them from within.
  • Caffeine. One of the most studied scalp care ingredients. Most masks only treat the strand. This one looks after the scalp too.
  • Panthenol. Holds moisture in, so hair stays soft and easy to comb.

What the research says

  • Keratin gets into the hair fibre. A 2021 study in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science found that mid-sized keratin peptides travelled deep into the cortex, the inner part of the hair. In the same laboratory study, which used chemically relaxed hair, treated hair took more force to break.
  • Caffeine and the scalp. A 2007 laboratory study in the International Journal of Dermatology found that caffeine stimulated the growth of hair follicles taken from men’s scalps. Another 2007 study found that caffeine from a shampoo left on for two minutes reached the hair follicles. A 2025 review in the journal Healthcare looked at nine clinical trials of caffeine hair products, such as shampoos and lotions, with 684 participants in total, and all nine reported results in favour of caffeine.
  • Conditioning reduces breakage. A review in the International Journal of Trichology explains that conditioners smooth the hair surface, lower friction and make combing easier. Less friction means fewer snapped strands.

Who the Biotin Hair Mask is for

  • Hair that snaps and breaks easily when brushed or tied up
  • Noticeable hair fall on the comb, in the shower or on your pillow
  • Thin, weak hair that has lost its volume
  • Hair weakened by heat styling, colouring or chemical treatments
  • A scalp that needs support alongside the strands
  • Fine hair that goes flat under richer conditioners

What a rice hair mask does

A rice hair mask is built to put softness, smoothness and shine back into dry, rough hair. The COVERAGE Rice Hair Mask works on the inside and the outside of the hair at the same time.

  • Fermented Rice Extract. Our rice ingredient. It is a standardised extract, not kitchen rice water, so it is measured into the formula the same way every time.
  • Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein. Protein broken down small enough to get into the hair fibre. It reinforces the strand and helps it hold moisture.
  • Camellia Seed Oil. A light oil that nourishes and adds shine without greasy weight.
  • Shea Butter. A rich butter that softens rough, dry lengths and ends.
  • Squalane. A lightweight oil that seals the surface so moisture stays in between washes.
  • Niacinamide. Supports a healthier scalp condition.

What the research says

  • Rice and hair. A 2010 study in the Journal of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists of Japan found that rice rinse water reduced surface friction on hair and increased its elasticity. The same study found that plain rice water on its own left flakes on the hair, and that rice extracts did not. That is why we use an extract.
  • Wheat protein gets into the hair. A study in the Journal of Cosmetic Science (2000) used fluorescent labelling to show that hydrolyzed wheat protein travelled into the hair fibre, including hair that had been bleached, permed or relaxed.
  • Oils and conditioning agents. Oils, butters and conditioning agents coat and lubricate the hair. The International Journal of Trichology review explains that this lowers friction and makes hair easier to comb.

Full ingredient list, COVERAGE Rice Hair Mask: Aqua, Cetearyl Alcohol, Behentrimonium Methosulfate, Cetyl Alcohol, Fermented Rice Extract, Dimethicone, Shea Butter, Camellia Oleifera Seed Oil, Glycerin, Squalane, Panthenol, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Niacinamide, Tocopheryl Acetate, Parfum, Citric Acid, Disodium EDTA, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin.

Rice water for hair vs a rice hair mask

Rice water for hair is an old home remedy, and the 2010 study above shows why people like it: it makes hair smoother and more elastic. But home-made rice water is mostly starch and water, it changes every time you make it, and it can leave flakes. A rice hair mask gives you rice extract in a measured amount, inside a full conditioning formula with protein, oils and butters. We explain the home method in our guide to rice water for hair.

Who the Rice Hair Mask is for

  • Dry, rough hair that feels straw-like to the touch
  • Hair damaged by heat styling, colouring, rebonding or salon straightening treatments
  • Persistent frizz and flyaways, especially in humidity
  • Dull hair that has lost its shine
  • Long hair that tangles and knots easily
  • Hair roughened by hard water

Strengthening vs conditioning: the real difference

The difference between the two masks is the difference between strength and softness.

  • Strengthening is about how much pulling, combing and tying a strand can take before it snaps. The Biotin Hair Mask is built around this, with keratin as its main fibre ingredient and a light base that does not weigh hair down.
  • Conditioning is about how smooth and soft the surface of the hair is. The Rice Hair Mask is built around this, with rich oils and butters, while the Biotin Hair Mask stays light.

Both masks contain a protein and both condition, so there is overlap. The Biotin Hair Mask will make hair softer and easier to comb. The Rice Hair Mask will cut down the breakage that comes from tangles. But each one leads with a different strength, and that is how you choose.

Which is the best hair mask for you? A guide by hair concern

The best hair mask in Pakistan is the one that matches your hair problem. For hair fall and breakage, that is a strengthening mask. For dry, frizzy or treated hair, that is a deep conditioning mask.

Your hair Start with Why
Hair fall on the comb, hair that snaps Biotin Hair Mask Built to strengthen weak, fragile fibres
Thin, fine, limp hair Biotin Hair Mask Conditions without heaviness, so fine hair keeps its volume
Dry, rough, straw-like hair Rice Hair Mask Oils, butters and rice extract restore softness
Frizz in humidity Rice Hair Mask Smooths the outer layer so hair reacts less to the air
Coloured, bleached or rebonded hair Rice Hair Mask Made for chemically treated hair
Curly or wavy hair Rice Hair Mask Curly hair is naturally drier and responds well to a rich mask
Oily scalp with dry ends Rice Hair Mask on the ends Applied from the ears down, it leaves the scalp fresh
Hair that is dry and also breaking Both, alternated One for softness, one for strength

Can you use a biotin mask and a rice mask together?

Yes. They do different jobs, so they work well as a pair. You do not layer them in the same wash. You alternate them.

A simple weekly plan

Wash day Shampoo Mask
Wash 1 Biotin Shampoo Biotin Hair Mask, lengths and a little on the scalp
Wash 2 Rice Silk Shampoo or Biotin Shampoo Rice Hair Mask, mid-lengths and ends
Wash 3 Biotin Shampoo Biotin Hair Mask

If hair fall and breakage are your bigger problem, use the Biotin Hair Mask more often. If dryness and frizz are your bigger problem, use the Rice Hair Mask more often. Let your hair tell you.

Shampoo or mask: when does each make sense?

A shampoo and a mask are not rivals. A shampoo cleans the scalp. A mask treats the lengths. You get the best result when both are working on the same problem.

  • The shampoo matters most for the scalp. The COVERAGE Biotin Shampoo is sulphate-free, with Biotin and Hydrolyzed Keratin. It is mild enough to use as often as you wash. It costs Rs.1,900 for 250ml.
  • The mask matters most for the lengths. Hair at the ends is the oldest hair on your head and has taken the most wear. That is where a mask does its work.
  • If your hair is dry and frizzy, the COVERAGE Rice Silk Shampoo is the matching shampoo for the Rice Hair Mask. It is sulphate-free, with Fermented Rice Extract and Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, and costs Rs.1,699 for 250ml.

The American Academy of Dermatology advises using conditioner after every shampoo. On the days you use a mask, the mask does that job.

The two matching pairs

Each duo costs less than buying the two products separately. Check the duo pages for the latest price.

How to use each mask

How to use the COVERAGE Biotin Hair Mask

  1. Shampoo, then squeeze the excess water out of your hair.
  2. Apply through the mid-lengths and ends, and work a little into the scalp so the Caffeine can do its job.
  3. Comb through gently with a wide-tooth comb, starting at the ends and working upwards.
  4. Leave on for 5 to 10 minutes.
  5. Rinse thoroughly with cool water.

How to use the COVERAGE Rice Hair Mask

  1. Shampoo, then squeeze the excess water out of your hair.
  2. Apply generously through the mid-lengths and ends. Keep it off the roots.
  3. Comb it through with a wide-tooth comb so every strand is coated.
  4. Leave on for 5 to 10 minutes, longer if your hair is very dry or damaged.
  5. Rinse thoroughly with cool water.

One tip applies to both. Squeeze the water out first. On soaking wet hair a mask gets diluted and slides off. And be gentle with wet hair, because that is when it is at its weakest.

COVERAGE SKINCARE how to apply a hair mask in five steps: shampoo, squeeze, apply, wait and rinse

Why this choice matters in Pakistan

Hair in Pakistan faces both problems at once, which is why so many people need both kinds of care.

  • Heat and sun dry out the lengths.
  • Humidity makes rough hair swell and frizz.
  • Frequent washing in summer gives hair more chances to dry out.
  • Hard water in many cities can leave hair feeling rough and dull. We cover this in our hard water and hair fall guide.
  • Tight hairstyles, such as a tight choti or bun worn every day, pull on the hair and add to breakage.
  • Colour, rebonding and wedding-season heat styling wear down the outer layer of the hair.

What to expect, and when

  • From the first use: softer hair, easier combing and less tangling. This comes from conditioning and you will feel it straight away with either mask.
  • After a few weeks: fewer short broken hairs on the comb and on your clothes, and less frizz between washes.
  • After two to three months: hair that looks fuller and healthier, because more of the hair you grow is staying on your head. Hair grows on slow cycles, so this is the fair time to judge any hair fall routine.

Both masks work on the hair you have: they strengthen it, soften it and help you keep it, and the Biotin Hair Mask looks after the scalp as well. If your hair fall came on suddenly, is very heavy, comes with bald patches or an itchy, painful scalp, or has lasted more than a few months, see a doctor as well, so the cause can be checked. Our guide to baal girna ka ilaj explains the common causes.

Who makes these masks?

We do. COVERAGE is our own Pakistani brand, built on our family’s 40 years in skincare manufacturing. We make both masks in our own facility in Lahore, which is GMP certified and ISO 9001 certified, and COVERAGE is Halal certified. We publish the full ingredient list of each mask on its product page, so what you read here is what is in the bottle. More than 72,000 COVERAGE orders have been delivered across Pakistan, with cash on delivery available nationwide.

Biotin vs rice hair mask FAQs

Which is better, a biotin hair mask or a rice hair mask?

Neither is better for everyone. A biotin hair mask is better for hair fall, breakage and thin, weak hair. A rice hair mask is better for dry, rough, frizzy and chemically treated hair. Choose by your main hair problem.

Is a biotin or rice hair mask better for hair fall?

For hair fall and breakage, the COVERAGE Biotin Hair Mask is the better fit. It is a strengthening treatment with Biotin, Hydrolyzed Keratin and Caffeine, made for hair that snaps easily and falls on the comb.

Which is the best hair mask for hair fall in Pakistan?

For hair fall and breakage, choose a strengthening hair mask. Our COVERAGE Biotin Hair Mask is made for this, with Biotin, Hydrolyzed Keratin, Caffeine and Panthenol. It helps control hair fall, helps reduce breakage and nourishes the scalp.

Baal girne ke liye kaun sa hair mask best hai, biotin ya rice?

Baal girne aur tootne ke liye Biotin Hair Mask behtar hai. Rookhe, frizzy baalon ke liye Rice Hair Mask behtar hai. If your hair has both problems, alternate the two masks through the week.

Which mask is better for dry, frizzy hair?

The COVERAGE Rice Hair Mask. It combines Fermented Rice Extract and Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein with Camellia Seed Oil, Shea Butter and Squalane to soften hair, control frizz and bring back shine.

Can I use a biotin mask and a rice mask together?

Yes. Alternate them through the week. Use the Biotin Hair Mask on one wash day and the Rice Hair Mask on the next. You do not need to layer them in the same wash.

Is my hair shedding or breaking?

Look at the hairs on your comb. A full-length hair with a tiny pale bulb at one end has shed from the root. A shorter hair with no bulb has broken along its length.

How many hairs is it normal to lose in a day?

The American Academy of Dermatology says it is normal to shed between 50 and 100 hairs a day.

Why does so much hair come out on wash day?

Hairs that have already shed stay caught in your hair until you wash and comb it. At 50 to 100 hairs a day, washing every third day can release 150 to 300 hairs at once and still be normal.

What does a biotin hair mask do for hair fall?

The COVERAGE Biotin Hair Mask helps control hair fall by strengthening weak, fragile strands and reducing breakage. Biotin and Hydrolyzed Keratin reinforce the hair, and Caffeine supports a healthier scalp, so hair looks fuller and stronger with consistent use.

Does a rice hair mask make hair grow faster?

A rice hair mask helps you keep the length you grow. It reduces breakage from tangling and combing, so more of your hair stays on your head and it looks longer and fuller over time.

Which mask is better for thin or fine hair?

The COVERAGE Biotin Hair Mask. It conditions without heaviness, so fine hair keeps its volume. If your fine hair is also dry, use a small amount of the Rice Hair Mask on the ends only.

Which mask is better for coloured, bleached or rebonded hair?

The COVERAGE Rice Hair Mask is built for chemically treated hair. If treated hair is also snapping, alternate it with the Biotin Hair Mask.

Is a hair mask good for curly or wavy hair?

Yes. The American Academy of Dermatology says curly hair is drier than other hair types, so it does well with a rich conditioner. Start with the Rice Hair Mask on the mid-lengths and ends.

Can men use these hair masks?

Yes. Hair is the same fibre in men and women. Men with short hair need only a small amount, and can work the Biotin Hair Mask into the scalp before rinsing.

Should I apply a hair mask to my scalp?

It depends on the mask. Work a little of the Biotin Hair Mask into the scalp, because its Caffeine supports the scalp. Keep the Rice Hair Mask on the mid-lengths and ends and off the roots.

How often should I use a hair mask?

Two to three times a week, or after every wash. Leave it on for 5 to 10 minutes and rinse with cool water.

Do I need conditioner as well as a mask?

No. On the days you use a mask, the mask does the job of a conditioner.

What are the benefits of a biotin hair mask and a rice hair mask?

A biotin hair mask strengthens weak hair, helps reduce breakage, helps control hair fall and nourishes the scalp. A rice hair mask softens dry hair, smooths frizz, adds shine and makes hair easier to comb.

What is the difference between a hair mask and a conditioner?

A conditioner is a light product for every wash that smooths the hair surface. A hair mask is richer and is left on longer, usually 5 to 10 minutes. Our two masks do both jobs, so on mask days you do not need a separate conditioner.

Do I use a hair mask before or after shampoo?

After shampoo. Shampoo removes oil and buildup so the mask can reach the hair. Squeeze the water out, apply the mask to clean, damp hair, leave it for 5 to 10 minutes and rinse.

Can I leave a hair mask on overnight?

You do not need to. Our masks are rinse-off treatments made to work in 5 to 10 minutes. You can leave the Rice Hair Mask on a little longer for very dry hair, but always rinse it out.

Do I need a hair mask if I already oil my hair?

Yes, because they do different jobs. Oil goes on before washing and lubricates the hair. A mask goes on after shampoo, when the hair is clean, and conditions and strengthens it. You can oil, shampoo and then use your mask.

Is a rice hair mask the same as rice water?

No. Rice water is mostly starch and water, and it is different every time you make it. A rice hair mask contains a measured rice extract inside a full conditioning formula with oils, butters and protein.

Does rice water really work for hair?

Rice water can make hair smoother. A 2010 Japanese study found that rice rinse water lowered friction on hair and improved its elasticity. The same study found that plain rice water left flakes and rice extracts did not, which is why our Rice Hair Mask uses a rice extract.

Is biotin or rice water better for hair?

They do different jobs. Biotin hair care is for hair fall, breakage and weak hair. Rice is for dryness, frizz and dull hair. A finished rice hair mask is more reliable than home-made rice water, because the rice extract is measured.

Is a keratin hair mask the same as a salon keratin treatment?

No. A salon keratin treatment is a straightening service. A keratin hair mask is a rinse-off conditioner with hydrolyzed keratin, which is keratin in small pieces that can get into damaged hair and reinforce it. It does not straighten hair.

How long do hair masks take to show results?

Softness and easier combing show from the first use. Less breakage shows after a few weeks. Give any hair fall routine two to three months before you judge it, because hair grows on slow cycles.

Are the COVERAGE hair masks sulphate free?

Yes. Both the Biotin Hair Mask and the Rice Hair Mask are free from sulphates, parabens, phthalates, DEA and MEA.

What is the price of the COVERAGE Biotin Hair Mask and Rice Hair Mask?

In Pakistan, the COVERAGE Biotin Hair Mask price is Rs.1,999 for 250ml and the COVERAGE Rice Hair Mask price is Rs.1,850 for 250ml, as of October 2026. Cash on delivery is available across Pakistan.

Which shampoo should I use with each mask?

Use the COVERAGE Biotin Shampoo with the Biotin Hair Mask, and the COVERAGE Rice Silk Shampoo with the Rice Hair Mask. Both pairs are available as duos.

The bottom line

Biotin vs rice is not a contest. It is a way of matching the mask to the problem. If your hair is falling and snapping, start with the COVERAGE Biotin Hair Mask. If your hair is dry, rough and frizzy, start with the COVERAGE Rice Hair Mask. If it is both, use both and alternate them. Do the 30-second hair check, pick your starting point and give it two to three months.
